What causes the racket?

What causes the racket?
So if you've ever heard an old bronco or a big old 80s caddy go buy you you'll know what I'm talking about. </P>
RPMs really make no difference, but the noise is especially present say at about 50mph in 5th. When I press on the pedal, I hear a ticking noise, like lifters or something. Just a rapid ticking noise, similar to that of the cars described earlier. Its definately in the internals of the engine, not sure exactly which piece. Any ideas? I really dont know how to describe it better, just a really rapid ticking noise that goes away over 3k revs, or I just can't hear it past then.</P><edited><editID>mustangforums</editID><editDate>37974.0446527778</editDate></edited>

I think I have what your talking about. When I put my car in 5th you REALLY hear it. What I've noticed is that its on the left side of my engine only which makes me think its a sticky lifter or something. I havent bothered to lookinto it cause I'm replacing much of it anyway.</P>

I have heard of pulling a spark plug wire one at a time to take the load off of a cylinder and see if the noise changes. The theory is that if it is a rod or piston problem, then the noise will subside. If it doesn't, then it is something else, like a lifter. I had the ticking noise on a 2300/4 and thought it was a lifter for 2 years. Then one day I really forced a merge, and it got louder and there was no doubt it was a rod. That was at 212000 miles.
