Default Camshaft Endplay (pics)

Set up my dial indicator on the front of the block. Thrust plate is installed. Gear gear is installed. Cam bolt is torqued. Dial indicator is as straight (parallel with cam) as I could get it. First, I pushed the cam as far back as it would go, and zeroed the indicator.

From zero, here is the measurement with me still putting pressure on the cam, just shy of .004":

As I let off, the measurement is .002":

Does this look correct, or am I measuring this wrong? I couldn't wiggle the cam back and forth by hand like I could with the crank. I measured my thrust plate to be .250~.0251", so I did sand it down to .248~.250"

I seen some specs on the 5.0 engines but I wouldn't even know where to begin on the stroker your building. Your far more into things than I ...

Im sure someone will hop on board and help ya out . Sucks when your in the middle of the project and need that advice.

What does the maker of the cam suggest?

I'd have to contact Ed @ FTI and see, although I'm sure he'll point me in the .004-.008 range. I'm waiting on an email back from him regarding cam retarding. I have .002, not sure if that is ideal with a torrington bearing

Probly your best bet is to get ahold of the cam maker and get the correct settings for it and Im sure he will know about that bearing too.

Not sure what year block your working with but I know that there are differences in end play on earlier blocks and later blocks .
I don't know if this article will help or not , but it is an interesting read .
