Default How much power can a T5 handle?

Okay so my car is around 300HP currently, that's to the motor give or take. I can't remember its been awhile since I had the numbers. I hear people saying the T5 is made of glass. Once you begin modifying a 1994 GT like mine you will run into tranny problems sooner then later. I am about to put 3:73s into my car and while I don't plan to beat on the car... I would like to do some hard track runs, casual redlight racing, the normal stuff you do with a V8 pony car.

Main question here? What is the life expectancy of a T5 if you raise to much hell in a stang like mine? lol.

I am also strongly guessing if I do a trick flow H/C/I come income tax time I am going to have to fortify my tranny? I am thinking about putting a T56 into it out of a crashed/broken LT/LS car.

I've been told the input shaft and case of the T-5 are the major weak points.

T-56 is a solid trans, but if you have the money I would get a Tremec 3550, TKO 500 or 600.

If you're not planning on anything major (like a stroker kit or forced induction), then I'm fairly certain a T-56 would be plenty.

If you power shift, prepare for it to break quicker. A T-5 will last easily 50k-100k+ miles at your power if you don't launch it at every red light. If hard track launches are what you want, get a new bellhousing and a better trans. For your power a T-56 is a great option.

Hope this helps, and I'm sure someone with more experience/expertise will chime in to help as well .

I don't think my car will ever be over 400HP to the motor. I found a T56 on craigslist for $600 wish I had bought it, but it was around Christmas and I need money for other things(go figure). While I would love to have something like a TKO they're kinda out of my price range. Right now I am just trying to save my money and gather opinions. I pretty much live income tax to income tax when it comes to making car purchases. The waiting part is a pain in the butt! lol.

you don't need a t-56!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I ran 10's on a t-5 for years on my 347 WITH nitrous, I didn't powershift and did moderate launches, at your power level a t-5 is fine

Number one rule to T-5 longevity - don't power shift, especially into third.

I've pushed 525rwhp to a T-5 with no issue. (including pulling wheelies at the drag strip, 1.39 short times)

I've seen they're rated at 300 ft lbs. However, its shock that kills parts. Not power shifting or doing high rpm clutch dumps avoids the sudden torque loading that will destroy it.

My T-5 has over 170k miles on it and it has been thru slicks and nitrous and about any other thing I can throw at it.
It is due for an overhaul though. Syncros aint what they used to be.

Thanks for all the replies. Man, this really makes me reconsider upgrading. I think I will just ride it out on the T5 until it breaks!
