My budget build...a few questions
I was going to just drop the $2700 on the trick flow kit for my 88 GT but I decided to try to pick up everything used and save a few bucks. I do have a few questions though...
I picked up some 24lb injectors for $180 new on eBay. Trickflow upper and lower intake used for $350. A new trickflow stage 1 cam with gaskets and timing chain and gears and a set of used trickflow heads fully assembled with 1.6 rockers. Will the stock valve covers work? Do I have to convert to MAF? If not what do I need to do? Exactly what fuel pump do I need? Can I just buy the $90 pump or do I need the whole assembly? What am I forgetting? |
Lifters! What lifters do I need?

As for valve covers, they should work but you might have clearance issues between the baffle and the rocker arm. Just grind it off and you'll be good |
If you want to utilize the full capacity of your injectors then yes you need a calibrated maf or calibrated tube. With the new top end you'll want to upgrade the air intake tube and throttle body.

I'd run a tall type valve cover so you have plenty of clearance for the rocker arms.
I would also do a valve to piston clearance check using the clay method....... |
I'll just pick up the Trickflow valve covers...they are pretty reasonable.
I found a MAF conversion for 24lb injectors on eBay for $450. Is that the best place to get it? If not would somebody please be kind enough to link one? A link to the intake tube and TB would be appreciated too. I'm pretty I found what I need but I hate ordering the wrong ****. |

Always check for clearance. No way around it

C&L offers mass air housings and inlet tubing. Their system allows you to reuse your factory maf and allows future easy calibration. http://www.cnlperformance.com/index.php

Bringing back a super old thread. I had this engine engine put together back in 2013 but ended up changing careers shortly there after.
If anybody remembers, I was piecing a build together while I was stationed in England and the car was in Arizona. Its been a learning process, that's for sure. I bought the car for $4200 on ebay and had it shipped to a buddy of mine in Arizona to supervise the build for me. The whole time I was dumping money into the car I was under the impression that I had $4200 worth of Mustang foundation to work with. Quite the contrary, the car was a complete pile of crap and nobody had the heart to tell me. Probably worth about $800. Interior was shot, paint was shot, engine smoked horribly. You name it....it was broken. I had the top end kit installed in 2013. It burns a ton of oil and still smokes. It idles like **** and backfires. Its going to have to be completely gone through. The speed shop that installed the kit screwed something up. I pulled the intake off and nothing is leaking. I'm thinking a head gasket? Anyway...Its still not running good enough to drive. I have completely replaced the interior. It actually looks pretty nice. Anyway, there is the update from the last 4 years. I hope to have this project done in the next 12 months. More updates to come |
