Why didn't you mark it when you took it out?

If you didn't mark it when you took it out, you'll need to set the crank at top dead center on the compression stroke and make the rotary button point to cylinder #1 on the distributer cap.

i have the same problem other than i had my heads off and had to hand crank it over to make sure i fixed a problem. now i know how to tell if ur at top dead center on #1 cyl but how do i tell with heads off that it is on the compression stroke. dont want to be 180 degrees off.

You'll need to rotate the crankshaft until the #1 piston is at the top and the camshaft lobes/lifters are in the lowered position such that both valves would be closed if the head was installed. That would correspond to top dead center (TDC) on the compression stroke.
