engine hesitates and backfires
I have a 93 mustang with 87 5.0 power train. Did a minor tune up and rebuild mostly just gaskets plugs wires and distributor. On cold starts the car backfires when letting off throttle to shift during normal driving. The hesitation happens when giving it throttle. 1st and 2nd gear both seem to hesitate or lag and half way through 3rd. Seems to smooth out after 3rd. Not sure exactly where to start. I converted the engine to maf since engine was map and also have the correct harness and computer for maf. I hooked up my multimeter and had good idle voltage and a smooth increase and decrease. Also heard that I should check o2 sensors as well. Not sure how to do that. I have an off road h pipe exhaust with the o2 sensors just not catalytic converters. Not sure if that effects it or not but that's what I've heard so far. What should I check to figure out the hesitation and lack of power?? Where do I start?

Check coil wire connector for being loose on the coil top
Just had the same problem, it was of all things just a very loose connector
on the coil. Formed the connector to make a tight fit and put on dielectric
grease... No more problems for two weeks now... I had just put in plugs etc
as you did...
