I am wondering whether I should put the engine and trans on the shelf so that if it ever becomes a collectors item when I'm through, I can still sell a numbered car.

This brings me to my next question. I have heard that you can bore and stroke a 5.0L, so I'm thinking about getting a new short block (correct name?) or maybe a used engine to start with.

What's your opinion?

Yep the 5.0 can be stroked to a 331, or even a 347 quite easily. Its done all the time. How ever you will need better heads, and a better intake to get the most power out of it for the money spent.

If your considering a stroker , you should consider a 351 short block and stroke it to a 393. It will cost a little more , but the HP to dollar ratio goes up significantly. Duncan gt is a member on here that is doing just that , I bet he would agree lol . Get his advice , he spent most of the last year building his and I think the engine is just about ready to go.

You can bore/stroke just about anything. A short block consists of the lower end, i.e. the block, crank, pistons, and rods. Long blocks consists of a short block + heads and oiling system.

As for what Dawson has said, although the 351w is a stronger and stouter engine than a 5.0 (power level is usually 450-500/5.0 vs 700-800/351w), if you go this route you need to also consider the added weight (60-70 lbs iirc). Adding front weight is no bueno in a road race car. If you would like, you can PM me on the full run down on my thoughts about the 351w vs 5.0 debacle. Or I can post here so others can chime in. Not too many 351 guys on this board though.

As for the 393, you can build one for pretty cheap

Depends on how much hp/tq you want. the bigger the ci the lower the power band. some people like power down low some like it up high.

the fastest drag cars in the world are much bigger than 302 ci.

you can buy a dart 302 base block with a 4.125 bore and build a 363. it will go 10.5 in the quarter n/a with a 288 dur cam if you want it to.

i don't know the weight difference in blocks. call dart for info.

If you are doing parking lot rallye cross, the 11 time world champ was using a 371 hp 350 chev stroked to a 383 ci, she then switched to a 620 hp ls2 based 350 chev displacement unknown.

I PM'd ya back.

As for stroking a 5.0 - depends on what your doing with it. The block is the weak link no matter what.

OP; I'd get down to miller raceway and find some Mustang racers and start asking questions.
Even make a list of them and take with you.
You can make all sorts of connections that way........
