Belt, smog bypass, and abig headache
Ok the belt tentioner pully started sqealing today. Bad bearing in the pully, so I thought good time to bypass the smog pump. I used two different routing diagrams from others on this forum. One was diagram 1. I changed pullies so it was a ribbed one and couldn`t get the belt tight enough so it wouldn`t sound like a murdered cat? I think it takes more to pull it tight that it does to push down on the belt like it should be. Diagram 2 was ok but the clearance between the belt and it`s self was close. I put the shortest belt on I could get over the pullies and there was a fingers width between the tentioner and waterpump. I drove home and looked again now the belt was all but touching? I was afraid if it moved any more the belt would be rubbing on it`s self! I tried so many belts. Finally I said F@#k it, give me a new stock belt. Mine was cracked pretty bad. Another thing is when they gave me a new pully it was smooth with no lips, mine was smooth with lips on each side to hold the belt on. Any ideas why the difference? I tried two differnt parts stores and still none just like mine?

RE: Belt, smog bypass, and abig headache
That's actually my diagram I drew up.
I'm running an 84 1/4 inch belt, and yes, it is very hard to get on. I had an 85 inch belt and she squealed like a pig like you said. The size belt I have running I have to walk the belt on like the power steering pulley or something, it's been a while. I checked the tension with a gauge and it's in the range of a used belt actually but works good. It chrips at cold start up but thats all.

my smog pump is off, and i just put on underdrive pulleys. i had to get a new belt but still dont have the right one, its a little big. you dont have power steering?? anyways, my best suggestion, for if you want to get rid of the smog pump is to get a long peice of string, wrap it around your pulleys in the stock routing, and tie a knot, take that string to advance or something and get them to size it to a serpintine belt that is the same size as the string. thats what im going to do.
