I was driving my car yesterday and all of a sudden it began smoking a little bit from the engine bay. When I stopped the car and popped the hood I could see oil splattered on the back of the engine bay and oil leaking out the bottom of the back of the engine. I let it cool down and while I was snooping around I found that the pcv valve on the back of the lower intake had come out of it’s place. I cleaned everything up and put the valve back in. After researching this topic I found out that there is supposed to be a little filter that sits in the grommet for the pcv valve? Mine didn’t have one. I’m kind of worried that it fell inside the intake? Is that possible? Also, is it a common problem for the pcv valves to pop out on these cars? The motor has been rebuilt so I am hoping that they just left it out and it didn’t fall inside the intake. Thanks for the help.

(95 Cobra, no blower or turbo, the car has some bolt ons but nothing radical)

The grommet/filter most likely popped out and you'll need a new one. Its likely to big to go inside the intake. Check to see your valve covers are vented properly. If not that's most likely what caused it to pop out in the first place. Also give the valve a good shake and listen for a rattling noise. If you don't hear anything replace the PCV valve also.

Double check that it isn't in the intake manifold. It does not belong in the grommet but rather between the grommet and intake manifold.

Sometimes it is hard to see. It took me a dental pick to catch it and pull it up.

it can't fall into the intake guys!! there is a blocked portion to prevent this on the intake......................

You need to make sure that aluminum filter/mesh is in there! It will not fall inside the intake and blow your motor up or anything. It's just like how a sewer cap is... it's round so no matter what angle you try to drop it, it will not fall inside the hole.

Remember, it goes aluminum filter/mesh, PCV valve grommet, and then the PCV valve. The guys who did the motor just probably forgot to put it in.
