Bad trans or just need clutch cable & quadrant kit
I would like to figure out if I have a bad transmission or if I just need a new clutch cable and quadrant kit.
I was driving my 5.0 and decided to get on it and bang through the gears. Everything was fine until I came to a stop and found out I couldn't get the car in first gear. I know I had jacked something up and luckily I was 50ft. from my house, so I put it in 2nd, drove it home, and parked it. I didn't feel like coming to the realization that I needed a new trans since I just bought the car maybe 3 months ago, so I left it alone for a week or so.
Yesterday, I went to check it out. I could get it in 1st gear now, but it will not go straight into 1st or 3rd. It goes into 1st or 3rd at an angle to the right. I'm hoping all I need to do know is get a new clutch cable and quadrant and that will fix my problem. I drew a picture to help understand what I was describing also. Let me know what you all think might be the problem. Thanks

Pull the shifter base out of the top of the trans, and ispect the pivot cup. It almost sounds like the roll pin that holds it to the shift shaft sheared off. or it fell out partly.
Either that or the detent spring broke and is letting it go to far.

Take off the middle console, ****, and boot, but then what will I be looking for? Is their a link or write up that can help identify these parts? I know a lot about my 93 Z28 A4, but I've worked on it for years. My fox body is new to me so bear with me.

If your car still hast the rubber boot in the pic below you need to remove the shifter handle by taking the 2 bolts out of the side of it. A lot of cars are missing this boot though its just a noise/heat reducer.
Once you get the boot out if its still there you will be looking at this Remove the 4 13mm bolts that hold it in place. NOTE the shifter base is sealed with some rtv and be a bit tough to get to break free. I always use the shifter handle and leverage it to the side till it comes loose.
Once you get the shifter base out you will be looking at this. Make sure nothing is laying down inside of there.
Get yours apart and snap some pics of it with it in the neutral position as well as when you pivot it left and right.

Wow... thanks a lot. This is real helpful. I will check everything out this weekend when I have time again. Where would I find a roll pin to buy. I found these on the web. Do they have different strengths/Grades like bolts and what size do I buy? I would like to purchase one before hand to save time. They cost pennies. http://www.autozone.com/autozone/acc...mString=search

You have to use the auto grade pins, and the size is 3/16 x 1" . If you ever decide to rebuild the synchros the rebuild kit comes with a new pin. I just rebuilt the synchros in my t45 and it came with the kit. I am fairly certain that the pin in the T5 is the same as the T45.
