This intake will give you some of the best overall power at your elevation on that engine.

I'm in a county that doesn't require smog tests yet. When I got this car the smog pump was siezed, the belt was rerouted without an eliminator kit, and all the vacuum lines involved in EGR were cracked and rotten. I want to eliminate all of that stuff but I understand that there are issues regarding plugging holes in the heads and the cat on the exhaust. What do I have to do to safely eliminate all aspects of the smog system? If I eliminate the cat can I just plug every vacuum port associated with the smog system?

If you live at a 5200' elevation the carb may very well have the wrong jets in it. You may need 1-2 sizes SMALLER. Even at this time of year your true air density could easily be 7000'. The 85 carb is really about like a 600 Holley with a vacuum secondary
I'd sure keep it before I went CFI or got any Edelbrock carb.......
I'm also thinking that the original carb is one that uses a metering plate on the secondary side so I would convert it to a metering block (easy to do).

First off, thanks all for the advice. The only thing I'm doing is going to BBk headers and dual exhaust. No smog where I'm at. Leaving the carb alone. Why fix it if it ain't broke. Doing this on the cheap. Can't make a silk purse out of a sow's ear without ponying up a lot of bux. Junkyards and C'list are my main suppliers . Just hope it goes kinda fast.

Barnett 468: could you explain how this works?

i wouldnt waste any time on the stock heads the e5 arent anything special. for a budget up grade find a 1996-97.5 explorer with the 5.0. take those heads and have them milled. they are gt40 heads. with a new cam and some roller lifters youll basically have a poormans 93-95 cobra motor on your hands
