Default AOD questions

1st post in this section and I did some searches without coming across the same symptoms. So please be gentle in the hazing. lol

I just bought an 89 lx vert. The PO said the car shifted and worked as it should until the cable fell off the shifter. Not really caring one way or another (was planning to use car for parts on another project) I bought it.

I reattached the cable and moving the shifter back and fourth feels normal. Now I start the car in park. The car jerks forward as it starts. Trying to rev the engine it seems under a load. I put the car in Reverse and nothing. Revving it up it feels loaded like park, but doesn't move. Shifting into Nuetral, the car wants to go forward. Then to OD and car wants to go forward. Then to Drive and same, it moves. Then to 1 and same it will drive. So I have no Reverse or neutral and seems under load while in park. The only way I can get the car to move backwards is by shutting the engine down. The car will only go forward or stay stopped while running. You can not physically push it backwards while its running.

I've had many Fox body's, but never an AOD. So I'm lost. ....Valve body???

Rather not take it in. Just trying to decide if it's junk or not. Was hoping to drive it for a while before parting it out.

Are you positive the cable is attached properly to the shifter and adjusted properly at the tranny. From your description, it sounds like its not completely in park or reverse. It's been years since I yanked my AOD, so I can't remember the cable setup at the tranny. Also, make sure no kinks or binds in the way the cable is run.

Yea, it's just a ball end at tranny and other end I made sure was in park. It did the same thing when I manipulated it by hand at tranny. when in park or reverse there is a clicking noise... And Thank you for the replies thus far.
