1987 Mustang GT Not Charging
Hi guys, I have an 97 Mustang GT and im having a charging issue with it. It has the upgraded 130 amp alternator off of a 1995 mustang and the alternator and the battery are brand new. I installed the new alternator about a week ago and everything was good, it was charging at about 14.5 volts when running. But a few days ago i noticed my volt gauge was fluttering a little, dropping down to 11.5-12 volts and bouncing back up to 14.5 volts. So i checked the battery while the car was running, to make sure it wasn't just the gauge messing up. And it was correct the battery was reading 11.5-12 volts. So I checked the connections on the back of the alternator and they seemed all secure, and I actually replaced the voltage regulator connector on the back of the alternator but that gave me no luck. I have checked for power at the yellow wire on the back of the alternator and it is getting 12.xxx volts, so the fusible link must be okay.
I'm rather stumped, now its not charging at all, it's constantly at 11.5-12 volts when running, it was jumping back and forth.
Any insight or advice would be appreciated. Thanks guys.

Follow the neg. cable off battery to the engine block. Clean that connection, and inspect the cable's themselves, a small cut to the insulation can lead to corrosion inside the cable.
If that all checks out good, stop by your local auto parts store, and have them test your charging system. A new alternator doesn't mean its a good alternator.
Good luck
