Default what kind of tranny fluid should i use?

Hey guys i was checking fluids on my notch the other night and i was checking the tranny its a t-5 stock ...and i stuck my finger in there and i could get some on my finger but i couldnt figure out why it was pink or auto trans fluid...i always thought they put gear oil the in manuals well i topped it off with 80w90 gl-5 gear oil i only put about a cup in it just to top it off i only ran it for three days (prolly 20 miles or so a day) didnt really ever get on it....and then i found out on the newer manuals they are all starting to take auto transfluid unlike the older 4 speeds that just took gear oil...but the bad part was that i found out it could mess up your tranny....i only put about a cup of gear oil in there and ran it for only three days and now im letting it sit til i get the tranny fluid changed....do you guys think this would have hurt my tranny in any way so far? i only put a cup of gear oil in there just to top it off and the rest was the normal fluid that should have been in there!....i was also wondering what kinda of tranny fluid you guys recommend or is required for the t-5? thanks guys id appreciate the advice!
p.s. should i change the fluid more than once to get all of the gear oil out or is just draining the stuff once good enough?

I'd drain it a couple times since it only takes roughly 2.5 quarts to fill it.
I think Ford says to use Mercon ATF.
I put Amzoil ATF in mine when I changed the clutch.
About $6.50 a quart, but it's some nice oil... takes a lot longer to break it down.
