Default AOD needs to warm up?

I have a '87 5.0 Mustang GT convert.
My problem is, I have to warm my tranny up to make it up the hill at the end of my block to the stop sign, once I stop, the tranny will release, and not reingage, unless I back up to level land, then it reingages. If I don't stop for the sign completely, it will keep on going.
This does not happen in the summer time when its warm out, but the colder it gets outside, the longer I have to wait.
I bought this car a little over 2 years ago, and it has always been this way. It also seems not to like to down shift (passing gear), but it will do it, when it wants to.
I thought that my shifter was out of adjustment, but P is park, R is reverse, N is neutral, but O puts a very little load on the motor, but doesn't even think of doing anything, D is drive with overdrive, 2 is second, 1 is first.

I have driven thousands of miles from Fl to Mn and all over the state like this and it purrrs down the road.

Any Idea's?

Thanks Pat

Possibly checking your tranny fluid would be a good place to start

You have O-D-2-1????? AODs only have O-D-1 as far as I know.

Could be a dieing pump. But first, just to make sure, have you checked the fluid level?

Thanks for the suggestions!

Nope, level is good, and I was "told" that fluid was change just before I got the car, little over 2 years ago.

Positive, it's a 3spd with overdrive. PRNOD21

The tranny isn't about to go, it has been this way before I bought it, once it is warm, it locks up tite, and shifts strong. I want to fix it before it does go bad.

Any more Idea's?

Thanks Pat

I have seen what you are experiencing a couple of times, both times it was a tear in the piston seal for the forward clutches. The seal leaks fluid till it heats up and swells, then it will seal, if this is the case it probably won't be too long till it finally splits .

^^^+1.... and be sure to spend a couple dollars for a Transgo shift kit while the tech is in there.
