Default Trans removal question

I am going to remove my engine and transmission together as one. Should I drain the trans fluid or just leave it in? My car is a '91 5.0 with an auto transmission.

leave the fluids and drain them after you take them out. make it a lot easier to drain instead of getting under the car.

Just be sure not to lean the engine on it's side until you've drained the oil, otherwise you may end up getting oil into your combustion chambers and heads.

I drained the oil out of the engine a little while ago but left the oil in the transmission. My only concern with leaving it in is that it might all drain out when I am pulling it out of the car. The driveshaft is out and I think the fluid might come out of the back of the trans. Any truth to this?

If you only pulled the driveshaft off and not the output shaft on the tranny side, you are fine. The tranny fluid will remain inside the tranny.

I removed the driveshaft altogether. When I jacked the front of the car up slightly trans fluid started coming out of the back of the transmission. Because of this I figure that unless I drain the trans all of the fluid will leak out when I pull it out through the engine bay.

ya it will pour out of there like a waterfall. you can get a plug for it though but they can come of too. your cooler lines will leak too and so will the dipstick tube if they are out.

Ok so the best thing to do is drain it into a pan before removing the trans. I am probably not putting that trans back into the car anyway b/c I am going to be putting a C4 in.

didn't think of the cooler lines.... I have a manual tranny so I forgot about the auto cooler...yep...drain the tranny too.

Even if you drain the fluid from the pan, it is still going to leak out the back of the trans unless you leave the driveshaft in or you find a yoke to put in its place. The case retains about 5 quarts of fluid when you pull the pan off.
