Ok so it is getting winter time and i am gonna be driving my dads truck. I love trucks i wish i could afford one. My dads is a 2004 dodge quadcab wiht exhaust and it sounds awsome!!!! while my mustang sits in the garage and while it sits i need to change the rear main seal and while i was under there i thought about headers. RE: Rear Main Seal
To change the rear main seal, you either have to pull the trans or motor. Once you get those two seperated either way, you can screw in a self tapping screw into the seal then pry it out with some decent side cutters or channel locks. Then you're going to need a sel installer big enough for the seal and pound the new one in. Lube the new seal up real good prior to installing, too.

So is it easy and time comsuming or is it hard and timeconsuming. Do you think it is do able by me and my dad. We have worked around stuff like this before. Cant i just buy a new seal from ford or something to replace the old one? Oh and i have an auto tranny if that matters

Mine leaks and I think its going to be a pain in tha ***. I got it priced out to do because im too busy to have time to do it. My mechanic said about 6 hours labor using a lift. Im really not lookin forward to doin it, Id think itd be easier to take out the tranny tho.

It's not bad if your good at taking out the tranny and putting it back in. The actual process of replacing the seal is easy... Its just the headache of removing your tranny and re-installing it. If its a stick I'd do the clutch (if needed) while it was all out.
For step by step directions find a tutorial on replacing your clutch (stick) or an AOD to T5 swap (auto). I've got both these laying around in old MM&FFs. These will give you the order of things to remove and any precautions.

RE: Rear Main Seal
Every 5.0 from 85 on is a one piece rear main seal. I think you and you're dad should beable to pull it off. Being it an auto maens the trans is a little heavier, but it's not that bad. Get the car as high as you can on jackstands, pull the DS, crossmember, linkages, torque converter nuts, bellhousing bolts, electrical connectors on your app, and any other misc. stuff I forgot, and yank the trans out, replace seal, geta Ford one, and reinstall trans.

You're going to have to take off the pressure plate, clutch, and flywheel as well to get at it. I did the clutch while i was in there because it was a good amount of work to get in there. I got the seal out by drilling two holes opposite of each other, and then screwed in some woodscrews/ sheet metal screws. Then you can use a claw hammer resting on a piece of wood and walk the seal out. Just be really careful not to nick the sealing surfaces of the seal. Might be an easier way but this made it really easy for me.
