thats been pritty much my biggest question with the automatics. wanting to get a new transmission for my 79 5.0. my question would be whats the best transmission and setup can do for turning it into a street/drag car. the transmission in mine is starting to go bad and wanting to upgrade. just been trying to figure that one out...

Get a stall. a well built auto is as good as a manual, and you never miss a gear.

what brand converter that has alot to do with it. www.edgeracingconverters.com

good converter, gears, shift kit and drag radials or slicks and you should be in the 8's

ive been 8.15 on motor and 7.52 on the 90shot. so you need to look for whats not matched.

It's my understanding that with Mustangs, having an automatic transmission (at least a stock one) is indeed a big disadvantage when compared to a manual. In certain other vehicles (like mine) the initial disadvantage is not as great, maybe 2-3 tenths in the 1/4.

Yes it is. Also, 5.0mustang5speed, it depends what you are trying to use the auto tranny for. If you are talking about track times, I gaurantee a PA C4 will poo all over a 5spd. Also, they are more consistant, and more reliable. I know that all of you manual guys dont like to admit it but a well built auto can be just as good if not better than a 5spd for the track. No, they are not as fun but they will still perform.
i know , i was being a dork, the only reason i dont have a pa tranny is cause i like the 5th gear overdrive
