Default clutch question

Hi, I just registered today, and I have a clutch problem. I have a 91 mustang GT, which is my daily driver. It has 107,000 original miles and I am starting to have a problem with the clutch. When I try to shift into reverse, the gears grind really bad. I am now having problems shifting the car also, it is hard to get the car into first gear, it's almost like you have to force it in although there is no grinding. The clutch still grabs down at the bottom of the pedal. Is my clutch going? Supposedly it's the original. Are there any ways to adjust it? Also, I should mention that it does take some effort to push the pedal down, and if you are stuck in traffic you build up your leg muscles. Is this normal? Any help would be appreciated..........Thank

you need a new clutch. but this is good!! now you can put a centerforce II clutch in it!!! if you want to do all the clutch stuff now there is a kit from www.summitracing.com that has a new clutch linkage, adjustable clutch quadrant, and firewall adjuster for like 115 er somethin. would be good to get out of the way.

Default clutch question

How much of a pain in the a** is it to do the clutch? I just put a new exhaust (factory replacement) on the car about a month ago. I wish I had done the clutch then. I put replacement headers and everything, as the factory flanges were rotted. Do you have to pull the starter before dropping the tranny? I think the starter is going to be a real pain with the headers and exhaust in the way. I put a new starter in while I had the exhaust out, it wasn't bad at all. It's weird that the clutch still grabs way at the bottom of the pedal. There's no cable adjustments or anything to try????????

there are no adjustment from the stock linkage, that is why i recommend the aftermarket stuff. but when the car is hard to get into gear, you need a new clutch. you should get a car manual (there are a buch of em) that says how to do all kinds of work on your car. it will walk you through clutch replacement and anything you will need to do .

thanks for the info mk, are there any books in particular that you might recommend? How are those Chilton books that are just for the particular model you want? I have the big Chilton books, but sometimes those are really vague.....

I had heard that there was some kind of plastic ring that was at the firewall where the clutch cable comes through. Supposedly you could adjust the cable like that. It was supposed to be a one time adjustment. Have you ever heard of that???? Was that for earlier models???

Want a good book? Buy the shop manual for your year Mustang from a Ford garage, or order it from http://www.helm.inc. They cover EVERYTHING in your car, from how much oil to put in, down to how to completely rebuild your engine and transmission. It's more expensive than a Chilton or Haynes manual at about $85, but you get a lot more detail and a lot more information.
