Alternator's are rated at max the stock is like 70 amp and at idle it will be a very low output. As the rpm's come up so does the output up to its max output, i upgraded to the powermaster 1 wire 130amp alternator about 3 months ago, i think i paid around $160 and ordered it from advance auto parts. The stock alternator is junk with my electric fan at idle my battery guage would drop also. Also check those grounds.

ORIGINAL: Derf00

has the Voltage regulator been replaced with the alt every time? I forget what year they actually started including the VR in the alt.
I *think* around 86/87/88 they were included in the alt. My 85 has a external. I'll try to find out for sure.

Just thinking out loud...
Is the belt tensioned properly?
Terminals tight & clean?
Fusible link blown?
Grounds clean?

Sounds like something is drawing constantly and making it work harder which can be, as said, bad grounds, a power wire to a component shorting to ground. Like someone else said, are the alternators failing electrically or mechanically, cause that would help to know. Yeah, I work at Ford, and no reman Ford alternator is $400, more like $200+ range, really.
