Gear MPH

Gear MPH
I have an 88 mustang gt with stock gears. I usually shift at 5 grand when I get on it, this means I take 2nd to about 40-45. Does that sound about right? I just want to make sure my tachs not off and that I could really hold second to 60 or something. If someone could let me know how fast they take second up to that would be great. Thanks

RE: Gear MPH
Ive got an aftermarket engine...but i have an 87 crown vic(183,000mi) also with 5.0 and 3.08 gears and i constantly wrappin it out at 5500 and goin about 60 in first....and the engine runs so smooth. I think its all on how you drive and how much you trust you engine....

RE: Gear MPH
Well I don't even think I could break 35mph holdin it till 5500 in 1st but i've never tried. I try not to beat my engine to hard because its got 186,000 miles on it. Its no dog though, its pretty much stock (O/R H pipe, flowmaster 50 series, UD pulleys) and I was right next to my friends 15.1 second truck when I raced him. But that was me shifting out of second at 45, if I could actually hold it out longer it wouldn't be so close. It just dosent make sense to me how your guy's engine dont redline till 50 in first and 90 in second. Does this mean your only in second at the end of the quarter mile?

RE: Gear MPH
If your not redlining at the same speed as us...then i dont think your gearing is stock...have you checked? Cause you speedo may be tellin you somthin and you may be doin less or more.......im hold barely into 3rd for a quarter

RE: Gear MPH
No I haven't checked to see if the gears are stock, do you know an easy way how? The thing is when im doing 45mph in a 45 or 65mph on the freeway im right next to all the other cars so I think my speedometer's correct. My car also seems to idle on the tach correctly so I dont think the tachs off.

RE: Gear MPH
On a rearend thats never been touched...theres a tag on the back of the housing on one of the bolts....it should tell you what it is...but no tellin if someone change em by the tag unless the put a new one on...doubtful though
