the 335/351C/351M/400M are all related, as are the 289/302/351W, and the 360/390/428 and 429/460

Anyway, the 400 is a 351C that's been modified (different bellhousing pattern, larger main journal diameter, .5" longer stroke, 1.09" taller deck height, and wider intake manifold, and the M heads have larger chambers)

The 351M is a de-stroked 400 (back to 3.5"), but the rest of the changes stuck.

The M is said to mean either 'modified' or 'michigan' but the engines were made both in Cleveland as well as Michigan. According to the article I got all of this info from it has no official meaning.
