Default Cams, once and for all

Well Im ready to buy a new cam, and I tried reading about them but couldn't find much on the subject. Can someone just explain cams once and for all....? Duration, Lift, all that and how you use those numbers in complience with other parts??? Im sure this isn't just for me (I hope) but I'd appreciate it...

its the dur. at .050 that you look at the more at .050 moves it up in the powerband more ,in has to match the compression ratio to an gears, etc.you just cant stick the biggest cam in a motor and think thats its going to be great, its better to pick a smaller cam than a bigger one, needs to matched to the head flow data if your heads dont flow past .500 lift dont stick a cam in it that has .600 lift,if you have a cam that has 220@ .050 and one at 230@ .050 that moves it up in the powerband another 500/1000rpms.than the 220 cam.you loose on the bottom and gain on the top with the 230 cam.

Well that was hard to decipher...

You should look into getting a book about camshafts. I have a book by Hot Rod magazine that's all about camshaft theory and how they work. After studying it a bit it all makes sense, even though it all seems like a jumble of terms at first. Cam selection is probably the most important decision you'll make for an engine project, so learn it well.

Trick Flow Track Heat intake, AFR 185 heads, B303 cam which i want replaced... anything else you want to know just ask. I would like as much power as possible but keeping it streetable and having as good sounding idle as possible. I want the burly low lopy sound where where here the slapping and all that (awesome) Let me know what you think.

the afr heads flow pretty good i have a 351W 11.1 compression, victor jr. heads,2.05/1.60.vavles 1.72 rockers,i got a custom grind cam from cam motion soild roller specs are at .050 dur. intake 246/.626 lift exhast is 256/.648 lift. on a 112 center. its a NOS grind it has good ilde.but sounds mean as s**t with my 3in flows with turn downs.the cam is fully streetable i still have power brakes and a/c,just log on www.cammotion.com they will take all your specs and get you the right cam the first time i have 2 race cars and both of them i have cam motion cams they are very well knowed by racers in the 5.0 mags most of the bad boys have there cams made by them, dont lie to them about what you have eng specs wise.they will make you the right cam.
