Explorer parts car
Typically I lurk here and search for my answers rather than posting, but I have not found precisely what I want, though I am sure it is buried in the archives somewhere.
My backcountry rig is a 99 Explorer
My city runner is a 90 5.0 'vert
I am in need of various parts for both of them and also beginning to focus more on upgrading the Mustang rather than just restoring and repairing trouble areas.
Currently I have access to a complete 98 5.0 Explorer. The body is a bit mangled, but the rest is in good shape. Plans are to scavenge every usable piece and spare part that I can for both my truck and the car. All of the suspension/steering components go for Explorer spares, and many of the interior/electrical items are for my Explorer.
This leaves me with the differentials, brakes, drivetrain, and misc....
Obviously the GT-40 top end from the explorer will benefit me, but I am curious what else under the X hood will help out onder the 'Stang hood.
Secondly of what use is that 8.8 under the 98 Explorer (mine is geared 4.56 and locked so they do my rig no good). Being that the Explorer is leaf sprung under axle I would prefer to avoid welding new mounts for the Mustang 4-link compatability. Beside I do not know if the WMS is the same axle to axle.
I would like to scavenge the 3.73's, L/S carrier, 31 spline shafts, and 5 lug rear disc brakes.... In short can I swap the 8.8 ....stuff.... form explorer housing to mustang housing? Will this require the master cylinder to be swapped as well (for the brakes that is)?
My next question involves the rest of the drivetrain. The 98 X engine only has 52k on it, what drawbacks are there to swapping the 98 Gt-40 block which is OBD-II governed into the Mustang? I really love the ease of tuning an OBD II engine.
Furthermore what challenges would be faced in swapping in the 4r70W in place of tha AOD?
At some point I had planned on this drive train going in my truck, but the mustang could use it now, and the truck will likely be fine for another 100k or more as the 4.0 OHV is a long running engine.

RE: Explorer parts car
the GT40P motor doesnt if its OBDII or OBDI
an 8.8 housing is an 8.8. internals will swap over
using the heads/intake off teh explorer motor is a better idea then just using the block. the heads/intake on a 5.0 HO block will raise CR and have more power. now if you cammed up the explorere motor and shaved the heads some then yes more power will be made.

RE: Explorer parts car
Thanks for the reply Quik.
Much as I suspected I would be told for engine parts.
Thanks for the info on the 8.8.
Now how about that 4r70w under the X? The wide ratio gearing would be nice if the swap was relatively bolt on.
And it would be a tranny with a 125000 less miles.
