Carbureted 5.0
Ok my brother has a 1979 cobra with a carbureted 5.0 and he an I were wondering which mods would be the best for his car. We know that is had a mild cam, 4.10 gears, and straight pipes. We were thinking engine swap or just rebuild. We were thinking we could bore it out, add new heads and maybe a different cam and HP parts (maybe nitrous). I don’t know no much about mods on carbureted motors.

RE: Carbureted 5.0
Well, IMO. Any classic car deserves a 351W (just my opinion). But if you want to keep the 302 block that stroke it (331,347), put a nice cam in there, some AFR 185's, keep the 4:10's, nice eddy victor jr manifold, and he will be set.

Depends on what block he has, hopefully it isn't a '79 block. I've had several '85 Mustang's and the last one was treated to a replacement Ford 306 roller motor, E-303 cam, GT40 heads (nothing done to them), Performer RPM intake, Barry Grant rocker arms and stud girdle, manual steering, full length headers, Barry Grant 650 double pumper, electric fuel pump, 3.73 gears, Mickey T street drag tires and a newer 8.8 inch rear end (85's had the 7.5, ugh)...
That sucker ran 12.5's@111 all day long, not too shabby for the cost of a rebuild. 302's are cheap to build and can run 12's with so little effort it isn't funny, make sure to get the roller motor of course.

RE: Carbureted 5.0
he should definately drop in a 351W. it would bo SO easy too. if you wanted to stick with the 302, just slap on some heads and an intake. that would give him a good amount of power

RE: Carbureted 5.0
first thing i would do is find a roller motor. thats MHO then do a 306 rebuild and do some GT40 heads or some HIPOs along with a 289 intake, 600 or 625 carb along with a cam with specs of 226-230 duration with a lift around .500-510 and a LSA of 114-112 this would be a stout combo. not the strongest but very streetable with a nice lope and great solid midrange usuable power along with some good topend power
