Default diff, rearend, problems with prespective car

ok, so i have found a gorgeous 91 Lx 5.0 black on black, power everything loaded 5spd, it has bbk cold air induction, crane cams roller rocker kit, bbk shorty headers, flowtech 2.5 inch H pipe, flowmaster super 40's, centerforce dual friction clutch, and a b&m ripper shifter.

like this is my dream car and i am totally in love with it, so i had it checked out today at a local shop for a pre-purchase inspection and had them check the entire thing out,

they came up wtih that it MIGHT need a new differential, and thats as far into it as they went, which was way to vague for my likeing, and so now my mom is like freaking out not wanting me to get it cause she thinks that its going to need ( what the mechanic said ) $2000 worth of work to fix the diff, but im pretty sure ive been reading on here ppl changing out theyre gears all the time right? like surely it deosnt cost 2k for new gears to be put in the rear end? so lets say worst case scenario and it does need a new diff, what would that run, in canadian dollars do u think? to do like a full replacement.

the reason the guy said taht it could be a problem is that aparently the rear end was (whineing) under strong acceleration. does anyone kno another reason taht would cause whineing? like i couldnt here it when i was in the car, but the mechanic can i guess.

im going to go look at it again tommorow wtih the parents, wish me luck.

I wanna know what mechanic needs 2 grand to replace an entire diff. You could buy a new Currie 9" for that much. And its not like you could go to a salvage yard and get a used diff and build it up for around 900 bucks. Car sounds like a sweet deal.

you can rebuild a rear for about 500 bucks plus labor so under 700 bucks is a complete rebuild minus axles with axles then it would be about 1000 total

He could also be hearing the tranny also...that is if it's a 5-speed. Most T-5s I've heard have a decent whine under accel.

You could either rebuild it OR you can go to a junkyard and get a whole setup for a couple hundred bucks and install it yourself.

if it only makes noise under hard throttle i bet that would last atleast 20K miles more if not alot more before you would have to do anything. id buy if i were you. did you notice a wine when you test drove it? if not it cant be that bad and ya the t5s have some noise to them sometimes but i would still buy it.

^ ^ ^ Agreed. If you really like the car that much dont like something so little like that hold you back from it.

detroit locker diff is $495

new set of gears is $189

less than 1k to fix the rear end... and you can probably get a better diff for less money... i just happened to see it in my 5.0 magazine :-)
