Default What are forged pistons?

Hey everyone, I'm new to the muscle car world (been in the Wrangler/offroading community), and I'm lookin to buy a 1991-1993 fox body . I heard that the 93 doesn't come with forged pistons...what are these and will this matter much with basically bolt on mods. I plan to do the GT40P heads (ported), K&N intake of course, headers, cutouts , pulleys, and some basic stuff like that just to get up around 285-300 hp. Also, I can't really find any low mileage fox body stangs at the moment, so I might end up getting a 4.6L [&:] . How well do these things do?

Default RE: What are forged pistons?

Forged Pistons are Forged (Compressed Molten Aluminium) when red hot..... Doing this along with any other sort of metal forges it and makes the metal alot harder and durable. Basically they cram more metal into Forged anything, rather than just casting.... casting they just get the material into molten form and dump it into the mold. With just basic bolt on's the un forged pistons are fine, they only are necessary when you are supercharging or get into a high compression motor. The 4.6's do awesome along with any other engine... Lots of people even run chargers with stock cast pistons, its all in the tune..... as long as there is no detonation.

The 93 pistons will be okay for the mods you have planned.
Forged pistons are a different material process than cast/hypertectic pistons.
The forging process, better aligns the grains of the metal to become stronger.
You should use forged pistons when higher strength is needed (i.e. forced induction)
I know this is a very simplifed explanation but I hope it gets the message across.

Forged pistons are a denser aluminum than either a casting or a hypereuetectic.
The forged metal becomes tougher and not embritted.
Don't even worry about them unless you are going to use forced air or squeeze.......
