the shaft should be hexagonal, and same as the pump.
something went wrong if it got rounded.
did you prime the pump before installing it and starting the engine?
ok one day my car had no oil pressuse so i pulled the motor and took the oil pup off and this is how i found it. did it just strip out? i didnt even see any shavings in the oil.

is the end that goes into the pump round? because if so then its your oil pump shaft that would be a lil weired, and hard to do. if that is the case get a new pump and shaft, also while you are their put new rod and main berings in. get a melling oil pump. a oem oil pumo shaft is fine, and get clevite 77 bearings.
Please only attempt this if you know how to properly set your bearing clearances with a micrometer or plastigauge. Otherwise your rotating assembly will only last a few thousand miles, if that.
so your saying i shouldent install the oil pump my self?

No, the oil pump isnt necessarily an easy operation, but its obviously a very doable procedure for most people at home. All I was saying is that its very critical to set proper main bearing clearances to prevent spinning them or seizures. Alot of guys that bring stuff to me attempted rebuilding their bottom ends based on the "just make sure theres room on the bearings method," and those motors never last long at all, 20K at the MOST. But dont be intimidated by it because its a piece of cake if you know what youre doing. But like what Tim said, if you know how to do it, this is a VERY good time to go ahead and do so. Make sure the new pump's pickup is welded in right, and def use Clevite 77's.

The pump bolts to the block. I think he is talking about the pick up tube. There is a tab that is welded on to the tube. And the end (the actual pick up) is welded to the tube. Just give them a look and make sure the welds aren't broke or anything.
