Default Question:

Alright..I know there are plenty of questions about gears...but here's another for ya'll

Ok..I already bought a set of Ford Racing 4.10 gears (installation kit on its way) for my '89 5.0 (AOD) cuz you guys told me that would be best.... I've talked to a shop about getting them installed and whatnot...well my dad is worried that 4.10s are too low of a gear...and might jack up my rear-end...He also talked to the guy he knows at that shop..and the mechanic also thought it was a "Pretty low gear..."

Now the question: Will I be safe putting 4.10s in my mustang? What else should I do to make it not shoot sh*t on me the first time I take it out 'n about... Any comments would be helpful... Many Thanks!

Its not bad at all, the worst that can happen is, you will wear out a bearing or seal faster.

Well, you could chew it up if you don't break it in good. It'll be tempting

Default RE: Question:

youll be fine gears wont mess anything up, your just changing the ration of the gear they are still the same size, just more or less teeth, and its should cost around 250-300 bucks to get installed. Be careful there is a specific beark in period, this is very improtant, Im not sure but its something like put the car on jack stands, run the car in reverse for like 5min then in drive for 5min and drive easy for 300mi, this is important beacause, if you womp on it the bearing and shims and seals arent seated properly and if you shock it(ie burnouts, WOT,dropping the clutch, etc...)it will change the seat that the carrier has in the differential, causing excess backlash, I didnt properly beark in my gears on the other stang, and I begain to notice slack in the tires on the axles and on the D/s, the backlash change on the gears and I had a small amount of slack in the d/s, it became so bad I had to take it back and had them reshim it, then it fixed it...I hope this helps, just basicly listen the the trans place on the break in period. just drive normal and you shiz will be fine.
