What type of exhaust are you running? Do you mean just a caat-back? When I had my 88gt I had a mac o/r H-pipe and flowmasters. The lack of restriction really let it breath...a set of good headers would have helped even more. Of course you'll have to swap out the original h-pipe to pass inspection once a year, but its worth t...only about 30 minutes worth of work. I also had a b-cam in which really helped as well.
My suggestion would be to replace the heads, upper intake and cam. You can usually by these as a package and save money. If money is an issue buy them used and then take them down to a machine shop and have them cleaned up for about $100 at the right place.
302s are VERY easy to work on and parts can be found cheap if you look in the right places. There not very powerful stock, but once you open them p the sky is the limit! Good luck!

No muffs? I have the same set up, sounds beautiful but there is a big drawback, and that is that there is no backpressure which means no low end torque I hate it and can't wait to get a MAC catback.

RE: newbie is dumb
nothing wrong w/ modding a speed density car.
converting to mass air is not that important.
speed density will run faster all stock anyways.
i would say get some geras...you will really wake it up, a nice jump to 3.73's or 4.10's will feel like about 100+ hp, for $400
get a set of cheaters and you'll run easy mid to low 13's
