Default Plug heads up for smog

Well today I pulled all kinds of egr/smog **** off. I pulled that crossover pipe off of the back of the heads. I read a million times that it needs to be plugged up; well easier said than done. I had a hard time getting the bolts off to take the pipe off to begin with. I had so much carbon build up: I know for sure that no air could have possibly been going through that pipe anyway. You all know where the location of those holes are (back of intake, connected into heads) They were full of carbon. I made a few attempts at scraping some out, and I even tried to finess a can of carb cleaner down there to clean the holes. Well I failed. I stuck a mirror down and I could only see a few threads on the hole, meaning plenty of carbon was still there. I went to lowes and bought every size bolt that was close to the hole. My question to you guys, is if any of you remember exactly what size the bolt was that fit in the hole? 1/2, 9/16, 5/8? It would help if I knew which bolt to focus all of my effort on threading in, if you catch my drift. Anyone have suggestions on how I can get one of these damn bolts in? Nitrous bob mentioned the part number for ford, and autozone didn't stock it. In that same post, someone else said that his mechanic believed that the holes would be filled up with carbon after 10k miles. You better believe it. Does this mean that my internals would probably have a ton of build up too? Thanks guys.
P.S. It definitely cleaned the engine bay up some, without all the egr **** with loose vaccums sitting all over the place, along with the hose that connects the evaporator to the a/c!

I just cut the pipes flush with the block that bolt onto the head and filled them with weld and bolted them back on.

I just began the ones on my 86 and a 1/2 in. bolt is what I got to fit inside. The bolt just keeps spinning though, but use a lock waher on it or something. or, just do what 86HOGT did. That sounds like a good idea.

Great I have a 5/8th and I think it may just be 11 thread. Bob in my post I said they (autozone) didn't stock that part, I wrote down the number you gave and took it in. I also have a 1/2in, I did sorta get that in one, but it didn't feel like it was threaded in; I may have just been burrowing a hole in the carbon... But you're sure its a 5/8 gilitche? Thanks guys?
P.S. I can return the other bolts if I'm sure it's a 5/8, plus I'll need to buy another
