Default Cam

Hi all just wanted to try and get some help going in the right direction. I have a 87 5.0 with a 90 engine in it. It is all stock except headers and exhaus, what I wanted to know is what is the largest cam I can get for this engine to provide power but not also have to change intake/heads. Supposedly the car has gt40 heads on it but I dont know how to determine taht.

do a search for this topic we just went threw this exact same topic with another member. Short answer, getting a big huge cam on your basicly stock engine is horrible idea, you will have emission trouble, it will be a pain to drive and most importantly will probably end up slower than it is now.

Man, my "one post a week about big cams in a stock engine" was wasy off. We got two in one day! LOL

I'm going to try a different approach to this one.

We'll start with this...

Why do you think you want/need a "big" cam?

not again lol, i knew someone who put an "f" cam in a stock motor
and it was slow as ****, ran like high 14's at best
so the moral of the story is you need the supporting cast before the cam
goes in, if your car does in fact have gt40 heads then you will be in business

Get your head/intake/exhaust and other bolt-ons figured out first. The stock cam is able to support quite a lot of power and you won't really have to worry about emissions.

I'd say your first order of business is to find out what heads are actually on the thing. Then I'd fill out the build sheet at www.camshaftinnovations.com and get a custom. But I will warn you. You will not get a big lumpy cam for sound effect. What you will get is the best cam to match your combo and your car. Or you can tell me I'm full of **** and order the comp "flavor of the week" or the trickflow "flavor of the week stage whatever". Your choice, your money.

OK, say I find out that I do have gt40 heads. What do you suggest next intake then go from there?

It's not about individual parts, it's all combonation. Intake, Heads, Cam, Injectors and all the other EFI junk you guys have that I know nothing about, exhaust etc etc.

Hmm well that seems resonable and I figured that it would matter that all other parts are up to par. So your basically telling that the stock cam is going to be the best on a stock engine that only has exhaust and gt40 heads?
