oh, T5 you got a carbed motor, you dont have any cpu assisted doodads pertaining to A/F mix...160* doesnt really matter then as you can control A/F yourself...

Default THERMOSTAT 160 OR 180?

after reading this topic my car now makes sense. I just bought it like a month ago. Been getting s**tty gas mileage. Done everything like tune up air filter and all. I believe i prally have a 160 therm. cause i can smell the gas from the exhaust from running rich, i have been lucky to get 140 a tank so around 10 mpg, lol gas isnt to cheap now adays. Should i just get a 180 therm.??? Also what would be the easiest way to find out what year my engine is from, )after buying it found out alot of bad things likes wrecks with mine. Just curious on what year my engine is how could i tell this??? any codes/numbers anywhere that would tell what year/model it came from?? thanks alot this is my first post on the forum thanks guys glad i found this

just buy a manual at your local parts store and it has all your info on where and what to look for pending on what year car you have

In the winter time you should run a 180,and in the summer you need to run a 160.I run a 160 in the summer,3 core radiator, and a high volume waterpump and i get to 170 in 90+ degree weather.I also have a carb as well but in the summer time cooler is better. With a 160 in the winter you wouldnt have very good heat.Thats the reason most change them.

Even you EFI guys need to run a 160 in the summer especially with stock cooling systems.I had the stock V8 2 core stock pump and 195 thermostat and it hit 210.I put a 180 in it hit 200,I said f*** this and got the high volume pump,3 core, and a 160 and i havent seen it past 170 (ON MECHANICAL GAUGE) even when im getting on it hard for lengthy periods of time.

In my opinion 180/195 winter. And 160 in summer.

but...for EFI you want to get that temp above 178deg (if you can't program your EEC) or it'll stay in closed loop trying to warm up with fuel enrichment...and that'll do you in on mpg...
