Pull the sparkplug from the number 1 cylinder, put your thumb over the hole and turn the motor over by hand until you feel pressure, then you can guage when the piston is at tdc by sticking something in there and feeling when the piston gets to the very top. When it starts to go back down then back it off a bit so it's TDC. You'll probably have to get a timing gun after you get it running again to make sure your timing is good.

Maybe you are 180 out, the #1 on the dstributer cap should be pointing almost straight back. It's also important to remember that the piston comes up twice in one cycle.. if your on the exhaust stroke and you set that as your TDC then it will definately be out. But if your positive you set your tdc on the compression stroke and our #1 on the distributer cap is pointing almost straight back, it should fire up it might run bad cuz the timing will probably be off, but it should atleast fire up.

If not maybe your plug wires are in the wrong spots.
