So how much power do you think you could pick up with a mild port on the stock heads?

i would recommend only gasket matching...as vfast said you can spend many many hours to only hurt your performance if you are not careful/patient/and know what you are doing. let me be the first to say after doing it more that once it is now one of the few things i will gladly pay a professional to do. my time has value as well and it takes FOREVER to get it done right. in fact it takes forever to get it done wrong as well

your better off spending the money or a good set of aftermarket heads then porting stock ones

Well the thing is, Im giving my old motor (stock 302) to a good friend of mine and hes on a really strick budget (hes building another car) so he just wants to do a mild port on the heads, cam, springs, rockers and thats it for the motor. I was thinking about trying it out myself but I dont want to screw it up since its not my motor.

so i checked out one of the links on the first page and the guy had pictures up of his head and the whole head porting process, he mentioned (and pictured them) guides that are used to keep from taking too much cast off and hitting the water jackets. are these necessary to do a mild porting job and where would i get one?
