Default running hot. gauge problem?

I've noticed that after an extended period of driving time, about 30min at 70mph, the temp gauge runs to just under the red mark (gotta love factory gauges, no numbers =/). If I run the car hard, say in a quick light to light race,...not that I do that...=P, then the gauge does not climb. The car has a brand new water pump, radiator, electric fan, rad cap, thermostat, belt, and hoses. It does not leak coolant, and the head gaskets are brand new. The heater has been by-passed with a heater hose connecting the outlet on the pump to the block line. Does anyone have any idea why it says the car is running hot? I've had people tell me that it's most likely just the gauge, that the stock gauges in these mustangs are just plan bad, I had another friend of mine who runs a shop near my house tell me that it was the way the heater was by-passed by the pump. Anyone have any other ideas? I think I might try and pick up an Autometer temp gauge and wire it in to see how it reacts. Thanks as always for the help!

your car probably comes stock with a 193 thermostat put like 180 so it keeps it at a lower temp.

Could be the fan is not kicking on high when it should be.
Mine is that way so I hooked up an override switch for the hot days and the track.

yeah def. put in an auto meter temp gauge and see what happens
before you start taking things apart, the stock gauges arent very accurate anyway

and if changing the thermostat doesnt work. they have a sensor hooked up from the fan just unhook that and itll keep it on. atleast until you figure what the problem is. then theres a number of things you can do to maybe help, CAI helps dont know much but itll help with cold air through the engine. then you have 2 wires that run through the EGR spacer by the throttle body, it goes from somewheres to the radiator the hose but it goes up like a 3 way through where your air intake goes into the upper intake. take them off along with the egr spacer and get soemthing to adjust for it so it fits, then plug up those the tops of that hose so the hot water isnt running through right where your airs coming in. my friend did it and it keeps his motor a little cooler. if you dont know what im talking about let me know and ill try to take a pic and show you

Thanks for the replies, I forgot to mention that the fan is running continuously and I've changed the thermostat to a 160. I'll keep trouble shooting it, I was out with the car yesterday night and this morning and I ran it like I normally do, and the gauge did not even flinch. Thanks for the help you guys I'll keep checkin on it!

I was having the same problem. The gauge is what my problem was. The gauge goes in and out. Mine seemed to act funny when I put the car under load. Try changing the gauge any way.

Thanks for all the help, I put in an Autometer gauge like I planned and it is so much more accurate, the car is not over heating in the slightest. For safety sake I picked up and Oil pressure gauge too, I'm not trusting the stock cluster too much so I am going to change it out for the kit Autometer sells to replace the stock cluster with there gauges. Thanks again for all the help!

if you do notice it overheating since youve changed everything, then have it chemically flushed. i know a guy that was running hot he changed everything and still it would do it, so he had it flushed and it never did it again. but if its working fine right now, then dont bother with it. gl with your car
