Default Replaced PCV Valve and now car won't stay running!

Okay, let me give all the details first...

On my 94 cobra I pulled out the PCV Valve and oil separator. I put in the new separator and when trying to get the hose hooked back up to the aftermarket PCV valve, the plastic elbow that is about in the middle of the hose broke. Sinc the hose was getting old anyways I bought about 2 feet of new hose. I plugged the hose into the back of the head and into the new PCV valve and totally left the elbow out since it was just there because of the bend in the hose. Everything is hooked back up but the car will idle really high and then die.It seems like there's some sort of vaccum problem...any ideas?

did you take off the plastic cap on the new PVC Valve that has two holes on it. Our PVC Valve only needs just the metal part not the plastic part on top

I left the plastic piece on, but I plugged the second hole. the plastic piece came with a plug so I just used it. The hose is a little long, could that have anything to do with it?

I got the separator from O'rielly's.

the hose being long wont do anything but I would take off the plastic piece and put the hose on the pcv valve itself

How did you separate the plastic piece and the metal piece? Did you use any hose clamps?

Okay, I separated the plastic piece and put everything back together. The car is running much better, however, now the exhaust pops really bad, and I can smell carbon dioxide pretty bad. It almost sounds like it's idling too low, but it's idling around 1000rpm or a little lower...any ideas?
