Depends......

A 5spd can safetly be bumped higher than a AT. But you really don't want too much of an advance. 12-18 degrees is what I have seen. But if you drive regularly then I would stay between 12-14 degrees. Keep 14+ for track use.

Also you will see more of a TQ gain than HP gain and you will only probably see a few numbers more in power if your timing is set at 10 or less.

I am running 12* now on 93 octane with my 5spd. I have gotten it to 22* degrees without ping but I dont like pushing things.......I used to run 14* but since I changed my dizzy I stick to 12.

umm i think its the other way the less timing the more tq, the more advanced the more power. anyway, if it is a 5spd you also have to rember not to have it to far advanced or your rpms will hang up between shifts.

more timing doesnt always mean more hp or tq. too much can hurt and also gotta watch for detonation. every car is different. ive always keep mine either 12* or 14* running 93, but i know some guys that cant get away with 10* or even 8* without pinging. i hear if u have aluminum heads u can also run more.

Suspect is right every car is different you will just have to play around with the timing. The best way to get the most out the car is to get it on a dyno and play with the timing that way so you can see the results

The generic answer is 'as much as possible without pinging', so find that point under high load and back down 1or 2...
Just switching to sticky tires exposed my 'too much' condition because the tires didn't spin any more.
