I want 3.73 gears

I want 3.73 gears
I've been wanting to get a higher gear ratio for my mustang since forever now and I've finally gotten the nerve to do it. I got to looking at the selection of different gears in the summit magazine and realized something- I've got no idea what I'm getting myself into. There are a ton of numbers I don't know anything about, endless options and differences. Could anyone help me out with this? I want to order preferably 3.73s from summit racing. If anyone could give me some suggestions for what I need, I would appreciate it.

RE: I want 3.73 gears
Well 3.73 is a lower gear ratio then what you have in there if it's stock. But what you need is a 3.73 Ring and Pinion made by Ford Racing Perfomance Parts. Or another reputable company, and you also need a rearend rebuild kit with all the bearings, seals, crush sleeves, etc etc.
I am assuming it's an 8.8 inch rearend.
I order my parts from

Here is the rebuild kit you need

Edit: After you get these parts you should find a shop that specializes in either mustangs, or general drivetrain, because dealerships will charge way to much. I found a shop here in edmonton that can do it in 4 hours for 72 dollars per hour, better then most other shops.

RE: I want 3.73 gears
well if you have the stock gears you either have 2.73, 3.08, possibly 3.55. These are all higher gears then the 3.73's, meaning you get a higher top speed and less low end acceleration.
Personally I really like 3.73's as they give alot of low end power but the car is still drivable on the highway to, if you don't drive on the highway often, consider 4.10's because they will give you the ultimate in low end acceleration.
Altho I hear there is not a huge difference between the 3.73s and 4.10's only noticable on the highway where the 4.10s would run at a higher engine RPM and burn more gas then the 3.73s
Prices can be found in those links I posted for you, but roughly 200.00 US for the ring and pinion, and 140.00 US for the rebuild kit. A good shop should be able to install in 4 hours with a decent shop rate around 70 dollars per hour so all told your probably going to be looking at 500-700 dollars when it's all said and done
good luck
Edit: changing the rearend gears will not give you an increase in engine HP or Torque, it will only make the car seem more powerful as it wil accelerate better. Gears have nothing to do with HP or Torque. But will make it seem like there is alot more power then the car really has. Changing to lower gears like 3.73 or 4.10 is probably the best bang for your buck if you want your car to perform better.
