Fox Body build suggestions
Alright guys, I'm new here and was hoping to get some help. I've been reading posts on this forum for a while now and finally decided to post up... I'm going to be starting a 5.0 build pretty soon, and my goal would be to get around 300 reliable horsepower at the start, and maybe supercharge sometime down the road. I would like eventually make this car my DD so I would definately be building for reliability... So I guess my question is, should I just buy a junker with a 5.0 in it, and rebuild that motor... or buy a crate? I personally am leaning towards the rebuild, but my head is spinning with trying to figure out what parts I should go with to achieve my goal. I definately don't mind down time with the motor because I already have two reliable sources of transportation, my 95 Camaro (This is what the Fox will replace), and my 05' Ninja ZX6-R. I'd appreciate any advice ya'll could give me... I know from the Kawasaki forum that I frequent how frustrating it can be when someone new comes in and starts asking questions

RE: Fox Body build suggestions
get the junker, have it bored over to 306
get good forged pistons/rods
good intake (edelbrock, trick flow, cobra, gt-40, typhoon....)
good aluminum heads (AFR, trick flow, edelbrock.....)
custom cam or off the shelf according to your head/intake combo
other little miscelaneous parts (roller rockers, valve springs ...etc)
if done right you're looking at 295-305rwhp / 320-330rwtq

I definately would like to overbore the motor and a 331 or 347 kit sounds like what I'll end up doing. I think to start off I'm willing to spend up to about $5,000 just on the basic motor stuff (not including headers and things of that nature) and I would be doing most of the labor myself (short of the actual machining of course)... I just want to make sure I do everything right, because like I said, this car will end up being my DD. Can anyone suggest any stroker kits that they've had good experience with?

RE: Fox Body build suggestions
thats a very ez goal to get.
just aluminum heads w/ a decent (not overkill) port job and nice intake w/ cam will get you that number.
port and polish the exhaust ports, and port the intakes concentrating on just smoothing out the turns, making a nicer transition.
if you hog too much material out, it will slow the air velocity and lower hp.
deck them only if you are NOT going to spray it, or use a blower.
i like the cobra intake for boosted app, extrude hone the upper and have the lower handported if you don't wanna pay for the lower to be extrude honed as well.
but EH both for the best performance. about $600 for the upper and lower, and expect another $700 for the heads.
but on a stock block, w/ a b cam and correct fuel/induction it will make an ez 300+ and w/ 100 shot or about 9 lbs of boost expect 450

If you have $5k to spend, plan on doing the enitre longblock for $3k. You wil eat up the other $2k in supporting parts.
Stock shortblock + TFS kit + exhaust + MAF/injectors = 300rwhp
Stock shortblock + TFS kit + exhaust + MAF/injectors = 300rwhp

RE: Fox Body build suggestions
The beauty is there maybe a hundred different ways to get to your goal and you have the decision of which way to go. If you do the build yourself, just know how you want to make your power, NA, FI, or Nitros before you start and pick all items to match that goal. Basic decisions would be very different based on which way you are going i.e. Compression ratio would be very different for NA or FI.
Part of the fun is learning how each part can make a difference in performance, choosing, and then see how it works out later.

well, im gonna step out of the box and suggest a 351W build. buy an old 4 banger, swap in the 351W (check the special stangs: 351 board for info on that), build up a 8.8" rear for it, get a nice reliable tranny for it (TKO if 5 speed, c4 or improved AOD for auto), and put other money where u like. you can easily get 300 hp out of a stock displacement (even stock internals) 351W block w/ some heads, a cam, and other little stuff.
