yes. from what i understand, 7.5 inch wont hold up under the increase in horsepower. the 8.8 is a must

Thats not true because depending on the power of the engine swap a 7.5 with whatever stcok gear could hold. The 8.8 rearend houses a more circle gear which is better than the 7.5 which houses a more oval gear. To save the money, unless your really going to build the car, i would just get 3.55's or swap out the gear in the 7.5 to whatever, they do make gears for the 7.5. My 83 had a 7.5inch with my stock v8 5.0. The only reason why i got an 8.8 was because i bought the whole rearend fullybuilt for cheap....And i mean cheap. I hade it checked out by a driveline shop and they refreshed everything and i had a brand new fully built strange rearend.

You can get a 8.8 housing and install the axles out of your 7.5, they are the same axles, you will just be runnin a bigger ring gear. I have had a 7.5 hold up to a pounding. If you run across a good deal on an 8.8 pick it up, until then put a gear in the 7.5 and run it till it breaks.
