I learned to use plastigauge when I was in tech school. We used it on our engines to measure main and rod journal clearances. The stuff really works well.
It's OK but I would rather use a dial and a mic. Is this your engine assembly? If so I highly reccomend that you find a person who has done it a few times to help you along.
We learned to do it with micrometers also. I didn't do it on my engine, I didn't even have the car then. We did it on chevy 2.5l's. I don't see why plasiguage wouldn't be accurate though. If you torque everything to correct specs and in the correct sequence then the plastiguage should measure accurately.

Yea it would be accurate but I would think it will be more accurate with a micrometer.

this is my third engine build, but last two were stock master kit rebuilds. no plastigauge, or mics used for it and truck is still running after 15,000 miles.

It can vary due to the type of lube used on the main and rod bolt threads. For examole if you use ARP moly lube (as is recommended) the amount of torque is less than what is required if you use oil as a lube. Used correctly plastigauge is fine, but I still would use a mic on my stuff.
