Ok here is the problem. I installed a 1995 5.0 starter on my 1990, for some reason it will not fully engage the flywheel. When I try to start it, it has this aweful grinding noise. The bad thing is, it does the same thing with the original starter. Does anybody know if I can still use the same starter on a C4, or do I need a different one for use on the C4? Please help.

Are you using the AOD flex plate (flywheel) right?I used a 94 mustang starter for a AOD and it worked fine. do you have the plate between the trans and the block?I ran into the starter hole in the plates being diff.sizes also so check that. also make sure the starter is be pulled all the way up to the block

I bought a new flexplate and block plate. My flexplate is a 28 oz 157 tooth made by Hughes for the C4, and the block plate is made for use with a C4 with 157 or 164 tooth. I watched the starter engage today. It looks like it it isn't close enough to the block to turn the teeth on the plate. It is long enough to reach the teeth. All it's doing is just spinning on the outer edge of the flywheel. I tried moving it closer to the block, but there is no adjustment to it. You can only bolt it into the two holes that are in the bellhousing. Pics below.

I have never seen anything like this in my life. I have now broken two different starters in one day. One was brand new. Here's whats going on. I installed the stock starter back in place of the 1995 starter I was using. When I put it in it just spins/grinds on the flexplate. If I kinda wedge it in with a screwdriver or something it will turn over as long as the car is not receiving fire. When I turn the ignition on it acts like it doesn't have enough torque to turn the engine over, then the starter gear hangs up on the flexplate. What the hell is going on with this thing?

Here is a hard question for you master Ford people.

Does anybody know what tooth, (157 or 164), flywheel came stock on a 1965 - 1969 C4 trans, and what offset it had on the starter?

I think I might have a offset problem.

Here is the setup I have.

1990 5.0/302
1965-1969 C4 with 11 inch 3500 TCI stall and a 28oz 157 tooth Hughs flywheel.

Somebody please help me. I truely think my car is possessed.
