exhaust leaks do make a ticking noise if it is a small leak,
putting is when there is big leaks.

im leaning towards an exhaust leak, they sneak up on you and can bug the hell out of you, besides while you have the manifold off its a good time to switch to some headers....see there is a positive side to everything :-)

Hmm about headers. Any suggestion where I could get the best bang for my buck? Also I am going to pick up a steth tomorrow and check the valve covers. Feel free to throw in more suggestions. How would I actually -fix- my exhaust leak if I have one most efficiently? Thanks again

you dont need a stethascope, just use a length of vacum hose and hold it to your ear,

You dont NEED a stethascope, but its got a long probe which can be damn handy.

As for the exaust leak, might just be the exhaust "manifold" gasket (manifold because you dont have headers... YET)

Ive got that ticking too. Once, it was my exhaust and that was fixed by tightening the bolts. Now I think it may be coming from my belt tensioner or so. But everytime I start my motor, I hear the ticking, and then it dies away as I get oil pressure. I need to put more oil in my motor...again. But, while Im driving, I hear it. So first things first, Ill fill it up with some more oil and check it again. Im almost positive my alternator is making the noise, but then my neighbor told me it could be the tensioner or my heads...

take a long screwdriver and put the handle against you ear tightly this usually works pretty good for me. but it definitly sounds like rocker arms and pedestal mount rockers from ford are notorious for making that sound.

I'm w/ them on the rockers...as for headers, BBK shorties or FRPP shorties.

As long as it goes away quickly, that's pretty normal.

It's just what you said, the lash is very loose until oil pressure builds.

Also, I found 3 loose spark plugs that tightening down quieted my engine considerably.
