Default gt-40 engine?? what you think good for a small budget??

i was thinking about getting the ford racing gt-40 engine i have a really tight budget but my oil pump went and its a waste to put the engine back in the car with 100k miles on it so i had some people tell me that this was a pretty good deal, what you guys think??

i have the crate engine with the x303 heads and b cam in my 91lx, its reliable, powerful, and sounds excellent. the only problem with crate engines from ford are they use hypereutectic pistons, not the best choise if your looking for a power adder in the future

how much? Do you need a long block or just a short block? Look at DSS, Coast High Performance, and others. You can get a short block for under $2.2k depending on what you want.

This is what the motor looks like out of the actual crate..

I cannot say anything bad about this motor. It runs flawlessly. I replaced the GT-40 heads with AFR 165's and retarded the cam 4 degrees to give me more on top end. I have additional mods as well. If you wish to go with a power adder, dont hesitate to do so. Even though these crate motors come with the " hyper-pathetic " pistons, it is all in the tune. I have the Vortech S-trim with 8 lbs of boost and will be upgrading to 11 lbs shortly, with a Chip and Tune of course.

Now she looks like this:

With a simple backyard tune (running fat), I dyno'ed at 390/397 to the tires. I am expecting 475+ after the tune.

Good Luck!

I've been looking at doing the same
but just came up with this alternate..........

you get the top end kit from here
http://www.latemodelrestoration.com/...NGINE~MCYLHEAD

then you get a short block with better forged pistons from
http://www.coasthigh.com

for about the same $3,500 you get the same engine
but with the extras of.........

Cobra Intake manifold and
High permance forged crank and pistons.

Ford has 12/12 warranty on the crate motors now.
Check at the dealer.
I think they would be pretty good deal if you want mild performance.........

I agree w/ you about taking that route, but I'd go w/ a different top end kit. On the 50resto link if you scroll to the bottom, they have the trick flow top end kit for $2150 and then go w/ the CHP 306 short block for $1699 (I think the GT block is tappet instead of roller)==$3849
