1984 5.0 carbed, was running great has 80,000kms on it. near the end of the summer it was idling high (1000RPM) all the time like the choke wasn't kicking down. but the choke wasn't on, when you are just cruising it's fine but give a little push on the gas and it hesitates (sputters) put your foot in it and it seems fine. i'm thinking timing, fuel pump, charcoal cannister,already did fuel filters and the gas is fresh. any ideas would be greatly appreciated

Have you checked for vacum leaks?

Thinking on the carb car small leak causes high idle been a while since messed with one cant remember.

yeah the vacuum seems ok, i thought that too but usually a vac leak wouldn't cause the hesitation at least i didn't think so

Maybe you need to clean some stuff really good, my old car was having that problem, it was throttle position sensor, it was really dirty and wasnt reading correct sometimes. I dont think thats the case here, but something is making air flow mess up, try cleaning some things really good.

yeah tried that i think maybe the carb is just in rough shape

i have this same problem on my car. 1984 5.0gt. it hesitates and stalls sometimes when i try and punch it off the line 1st gear. A friend tipped me off to not burnin fuel pr vacuum leak or that my engine wasn't burnin the fuel clean enuff. So im in the process of replacing my ignition(it was on the list anyways) complete msd kit plugs n wires coil distributor and all. if you figure out the prioblem let me know man.

yeah plugs and wires and all the ignition are on the list to do when it comes out of storage. Also going to take the carb off and clean it really well maybe replace it. new intake and valve covers as well hopefully find the problem it's either fuel or igition so just gotta eliminate stuff

what kind of carb is it¿ have you adjusted the idle screws to bring the rpms down to where it should be at idle¿

no i haven't played with the carb too much. and unfortunately it's in storage wish i had it out to toy with
