i'm about to get my tools, the way i figured theres no reason to get snap-on/mac/matco screwdrivers, hammers, and small pry bars, basically all the stuff that will be beat on.However specialty tools, ratchets, torque wrenches, impact sockets and other important stuff i'll go with snap-on and mac. Of course keep crappy auto store wrenches around so you can bend them to get into certain areas

RE: What brand tools to get?
well i just got all my grandpa's old tools.
a snap on box filled with only snap on...ratches, wrenches, everything and specialty tools for just about everything. after about 50 years they all still work like new. ofcourse he's replaced some things like the gears and stuff in ratchets...but other than that it all works perfect. so id say just spend some extra money and u wont have to waist any for new tools after 5 years.

or you can go to lowe's and get kobalt's those were made by snap-on as well. if you want to go cheap street with lifetime warranties then get pittsburgh from harbor freight. my work box has those but my home box has craftsman. i'm not sure about your environment but i work in a job shop and various people from various lvels of life come through the shop so i try to get the cheaper version so if things take missing it's no big deal. my trade- machinist, it's not really frowned upon to borrow tools but you really should look into getting your own or finding a way around it. i also buy the cheaper wrenches to spend the money or specialty tools. TRY you pawn shops too. you can haggle some good deals there

like has already been stated more than once..
most all of my hand tools are Craftsman, simply because the hand tools are more likely to break, because they are used more often. If I crack a socket, or strip out a ratchet, I can swing by Sears on my way home that night, instead of waiting a week for the Snappy man to come.
BUT
Craftsman simply DOES NOT make 75% of the specialty stuff that you absolutely need, once you start getting better as a tech.
Craftsman air tools SUCK, stay away. As a matter of fact, any air tool that you can purchase in a store, pretty much blows.
Ingersol Rand makes the best air tools, by far.
Snap on makes good air ratchets and die grinders, etc, but I have their newest impact gun, IMO its bulky, heavy, and over rated.
