Default ticketed for being too loud???

has anyone here ever gotten a ticket because they had an o/r pipe and the cop said you were "too loud"??? i was talking to a guy today that had an o/r x and he was telling me that the guy he bought it from had a $150 ticket because of it. and a friend of the family that is a mechanic said that he's hearing all the time about kids getting pulled over for it.

It depends on where you live. Here in Cali, CHP information bulletin 98-100 was adressed to California law enforcement specifically because of excessive and incorrect ticketing of vehicles with modified exhausts. It basically tells cops that they can't ticket a car that isn't "excessively loud or obnoxious, or emitting an unusual sound for a motor vehicle," even if the car appears to have no muffler. SEMA made some pushes and California recently instituted sound testing stations at the40 California smog referee stationsto test vehicles by the SAE J1169 standard, which is what is called for under California Vehicle Code 27150 and 27151, and the last year or so of testing has shown that nearly all of the "excessive noise" tickets written for exhaust systems were erroneous. So, depending on what state you live in and what the laws are, it may or may not be legal.

i live in MA which states no modified exhaust.

my exhaust is pretty stealthy below 1500 rpm's but anywhere from 2-5k is pretty damn loud. never had a problem.

also at idle it sounds really throaty but i give it gas and it smooths/mellows out.

I have an o/r H pipe and dumps and I've never had a problem.

I'm surprised that happened though, usually the south is more lenient about stuff like that.

You should check about modified exhaust laws in your state. I know California is pretty strict on everything, and they state no modified exhaust UNLESS it meets provisions set down by the VC. IE, no exhaust mods unless the noise is 95dB or less at 20in from the exhaust tip at a 45deg angle in neutral at 3,500rpm or thereabouts(the SAE J1169 standard). Cops out here used to write violations for 27151, "modified exhaust", saying that any exhaust mod was illegal, but 27151 saysifthe modmeets 27150 it IS legal, which is the one they'd "fail" to tell you about. Cops are pretty notorious for ignoring the parts of the vehicle code they find convenient at the time they write tickets. Unfortunately sometimes you need to educate yourself about the facts, otherwise you get told falshoods and taken advantage of. Obviously, it because such a huge deal that SEMA had to lobby state governments just to get the officers to CORRECTLY enforce the state laws. How many people do you suppose in the last 15 years or more in California paid fines to the state for modified exhaust when their modification met the requirements of the vehicle code? I'll bet this state has raked in a lot of dough for false tickets, simply because people who recieved them didn't know what the law actually said

In Delaware they don't really give a f*ck cause all the hicks are riding around with straight pipes with no mufflers.

The part of maryland where I live isn't too strict on exhaust but a lot of areas with to many ricers they can get pretty strict.

I found around here if someone takes their race car for a spin around the block(no mufflers, no tags, no places, no brake lights, no turn signals) they're like "Just be careful and don't race it," but when a rice car with a fart can gets over 2,000rpm....*bwoooooop bwoop bwoop* "Pull the vehicle over!" and they write them aticket. This is sorta a redneck county though, so there's a definate bias/favoritism towards American Muscle, and a total abject hatred of rice.....not that I'm complaining
