Default RE: 1-d-1 shuffle

As stated above, the 1-d-1 lets you hold second gear longer in an old AOD tranny. The AOD tranny shift pattern goed 1-D-OD-N-R-P. If you try to manualyl shift, you can start out in 1, but as soon as you shift it up one position to "D" it will shift to second for a split second and then go right to thirs. So your engine has to struggle a bit and you're completely missing / wasting a perfectly good gear. It's not going to affect your OD band because you're never shifting itno OD and it won't shift into OD at WOT anyway (if everything is working as it should.)

That's where the 1-D-1 shuffle comes in. You start in 1. Then when you're ready to go to second hear, you briefly shift it into D and then right back into 1. That will make it hold second gear for as long as you want. Then just shift it back into D again to get into third. Of course, that's not always a good thing and it puts a beating on the stock tranny.

Luckily, I have an AODE tranny, so that's never an issue. My shift pattern is 1-2-D-N-R-P so I can manualyl shift through the gears anyway. Then I added a shift kit, ratchet shifter, and rebuilt tranny just to reinforce it.

A solution for those with an AOD... you can buy a valve body with electronic OD delete. Overdrive can be turned on and off by the flick of a switch. When OD is on, it will drive and shift normally. When OD is turned off, you shift 1-D-OD but it actually shifts 1-2-3 when you do it manually. That's probably one of the better solutions available.

Isn't that the same thing as D-2-D, and wouldn't that be better/easier to get quicker and harder shifts?

I'm not sure what you mean by D-2-D. The AOD tranny didn't have a 2. It was 1-D-OD. The AODE had 1-2-D. The problem is the fact that you can't normally select second gear manually. So 1-D-1 is the way around that limitation.

Unless you mean OD-D-OD, but that would be pointless and would be the same as leaving it in D when at WOT.

Well, I know in the 4r70W AODE it is "programmed" into the tranny (or so I have heard, many, many times so don't quote me on that) for quicker/harder shifts than normal. Start in D, run it through 1st like this until it hits the RPM the tranny shifts to 2nd. Right then, pull the shifter down into 2, and run that to your optimum shift point, then back into D for 3rd. I have done this in my 03 auto 6 and it does seem better this way. Or it may just be in my head

To be honest, I've never tried that. But I wouldn't be able to now because I have done too much. First there's a shift kit which firms it up anyway (on a rebuilt tranny.) Then I used my Tweecer RT to both alter my shift points and to increase line pressure to firm up the shifts even more. Then for good measure, I tossed on a B&M hammer ratchet shifter to make manual shifting easier... All while the Procharger is pushing 10 PSI and the nitrous is spraying, lol. So 1-2-D kicks *** for me, but I imagine D-2-D could work... just not sure if it would make a difference.
