Massachusetts Emissions-5.0s Exempt??
I heard from a reliable source that our 5.0s may not have to pass any emission test starting late 2008. Of course not sure if a visual will still apply or if we can rip off our cats etc....I found this...will send updates as I obtain them:

Dear Interested Party:
The Commonwealth’s
Enhanced Emissions & Safety Test contract with Applus+ Technologies expires in two years, on September 30, 2008, and the Department of Environmental Protection (MassDEP) and Registry of Motor Vehicles (RMV) are actively planning for the future. MassDEP and RMV held six public meetings during August to receive comments and feedback from interested parties. Based upon the comments and feedback received at the public meetings, the agencies
have begun fine-tuning the working assumptions for the next program and are preparing to draft a Request for Response (RFR). The agencies intend to issue the RFR next spring, and hope to have a contractor selected and in place to begin the transition to the new program no later than early 2008.
The working assumptions for the next contract include:
•
Continuation of a combined, decentralized safety and emissions inspection to ensure vehicle safety and clean air, as well as convenience for motorists.
•
Elimination of tailpipe testing of gasoline-powered vehicles by exclusively relying on annual onboard diagnostic (OBD) emissions testing, since the vast majority of vehicles in theMassachusetts fleet are OBD-equipped.(1996 and up)
If you have comments, suggestions or questions about the next
Enhanced Emissions & Safety Test contract and how it might affect you, please contact Christine Kirby of MassDEP atChristine.Kirby@state.ma.usor Mark LaFrance of RMV at Mark.LaFrance@state.ma.us.
Sincerely,
Christine Kirby Mark LaFrance

RE: Massachusetts Emissions-5.0s Exempt??
Good to know....
Have you heard if there will still be a visual inspection or not...I would love to loose my cats and install a nice 3 inch exhaust with some long tubes...

RE: Massachusetts Emissions-5.0s Exempt??
sigh, i gotta admit i'm pretty tired of saying this...
but nevertheless, here goes...
Catalytic Converters are a FEDERAL REQUIREMENT since 1973. Whether or not your car has to pass a sniffer test, it is a $10,000 fine PER STOCK CAT that you remove, IN ANY STATE.
Does NOT matter if you have annual inspections or not.
Now, with that said, go to some humbum town and find a guy missing a few teeth and throw him a $20 in addition to the $29 inspection fee. He will pass it.
but nevertheless, here goes...
